Eye Exam
At South Island Optometry Centres, we pride ourselves on giving the best possible eye exam to all our patients. Our eye exam starts with Pre-Testing which includes; Optomap Retinal Scan, automatic-refraction, intra-ocular pressures, visual field test, check for colour blindness, checking glasses perscriptions, medical history and Snellen eye chart visual acuites. The Doctors exam includes: binocular vision testing, opthalmoscopy (examination of the internal structure of the eye using the Ophthalmoscope), biomicroscope evaluation, determining new spectacle or contact lenses perscriptions along with recommended therapy for discovered conditions.
Many retinal conditions are without symptoms and most optometric practices only use dilation drops to further examine the retina. An Optomap Retinal Exam enables our doctors to examine a 200° internal view of a patient's retina. This ground breaking technology allows us detection of systemic diseases such as high blood pressure, diabetes, some types of cancer and leukemia as well as early detection of retinal ailments such as:
- age related macular degeneration
- retinal tears
- diabetic retinopathy
- retinal detachments
- retinal tumors
- retinal traction
- retinal bleeding
- retinal scarring
- retinal pigmentosa
- ocular Histoplasmosis
- choroidal folds
- retinal vessel obstruction
- choroidal nevus
- hypertensive retinopathy
- toxoplasmosis
Our practice can also email patients their personal retinal scans! For further information on Optomaps Retinal Exam please visit their website.
Automatic-Refraction measures the natural or contact lens corrected vision of the patient. A picture fades in and out of focus in front of the patient. The automatic-refraction measures the focusing ability and takes a three-dimensional reading. This estimates the cylinder, axis, astigmatism and pupil distance between the eyes.
Non contact tonometry allows readings of each eyes' intra-ocular pressures will be taken. High intra-ocular pressures may be an indication of glaucoma (often with no symptoms) or contact lens incapability. Infrared light measures the time it takes for the the air to reach the cornea and when it is exactly flattened in milliseconds. It takes less time for the puff of air to flatten a soft eye than it does a hard eye.
Our offices offer several visual field tests. An eye exam includes an FDT screening c-20-5 which tests peripheral vision. This shows us how well a patient can see all areas around while staring straight ahead. Other visual fields tests may be requested as the exam continues.
All new patients are tested for colour blindness.
What an optometrist looks for in an eye exam is certainly more than "Which is better, one or two?".
As much as this is an integral part of an eye exam and must be done accurately to provide a clear and comfortable perscription for glasses or contacts, we will look for anything wrong with the eye and ocular system. The binocular system also will be checked to make sure that the eyes are working together properly. We'll evaluate the external and internal eye health, checking for everything from blepharitis and dry eye to more serious problems such as glaucoma, cataracts, macular degeneration, retinal holes on detachments, as well as other retinal problems. Optometrists will often be the doctor that first discovers medical conditions such as diabetes, hypertension and high cholesterol. Once all inspections are completed and data has been gathered, optometrists are best suited to provide spectacle or contact lens correction, visual treatment or counseling for laser treatment or other surgery. Having a spectacle lens edging lab in both offices and a special interest in contact lenses for over forty years, we at South Island Optometry Centres are a professional supplier for your spectacle and contact lenses needs.
